* Typical use shown under each figure, 30 days, at the Ofgem price cap (26.32p/kWh). Typical means the seller does not publish the power, so we use a typical figure for that kind of appliance. Recalculated every update.

How we ranked them
  • Running cost: What each one costs per hour and per month at the Ofgem price cap (26.32p/kWh). Watt for watt, every electric heater costs the same to run: the one that saves money is the right size and switches itself off.
  • Controls: Thermostats, timers, weekly schedules, eco modes and Wi-Fi score highest: they are what actually cuts the bill.
  • Safety: Tip-over and overheat protection, and splash protection (IP24) for bathrooms.
  • What buyers say: Amazon UK sales and what buyers repeat in their reviews, summarised in our own words. Newer models with few reviews score lower until they have them.

We don't test products at home: we combine manufacturers' specifications, Amazon UK listings and buyer feedback with the running-cost maths. How we compare.

Do oil filled radiators use a lot of electricity?

No more than any electric heater of the same power: a 2 kW model uses 2 kWh an hour at full power. Their advantage is that the oil holds the heat, so once the room is warm the thermostat keeps them off for longer, and they are silent. Choose roughly 100 W per m²: 1.5 kW for a 15 m² bedroom, 2 kW for a 20 m² living room.

Oil filled or oil-free?

Oil-free column radiators (like the Dimplex ECR20) are lighter and warm up faster; oil filled ones hold the heat a little longer. Running costs per watt are the same.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an oil filled radiator cost to run?

A 2 kW model costs 52.6p an hour at full power at the price cap. On the thermostat, 5 hours a day, about £47.38 a month; a 1.5 kW model about £35.53.

Are oil filled radiators cheaper to run than fan heaters?

Per hour at full power, no: watt for watt they cost the same. Over a whole evening they often cost less because the thermostat keeps them off for longer once the room is warm.

Can I leave an oil filled radiator on overnight?

They are designed for long periods. Use the thermostat on a low setting, keep it away from bedding and curtains, and plug it straight into the wall.

What size oil filled radiator do I need?

About 100 W per m² in a reasonably insulated room: 650 W for a box room, 1.5 kW for a 15 m² bedroom, 2–2.5 kW for a living room.

Running costs use the Ofgem energy price cap, 1 October to 31 December 2026: average unit rate for electricity paid by Direct Debit (26.32p/kWh, standing charge 54.83p/day) and gas (7.97p/kWh).
