How we ranked them
  • Running cost: What each one costs per hour and per month at the Ofgem price cap (26.32p/kWh). Watt for watt, every electric heater costs the same to run: the one that saves money is the right size and switches itself off.
  • Controls: Thermostats, timers, weekly schedules, eco modes and Wi-Fi score highest: they are what actually cuts the bill.
  • Safety: Tip-over and overheat protection, and splash protection (IP24) for bathrooms.
  • What buyers say: Amazon UK sales and what buyers repeat in their reviews, summarised in our own words. Newer models with few reviews score lower until they have them.

We don't test products at home: we combine manufacturers' specifications, Amazon UK listings and buyer feedback with the running-cost maths. How we compare.

Heat yourself, not the house

Heating a whole home for an evening can cost several pounds; a heated throw costs pennies. Combined with a lower thermostat (every degree lower saves energy), it is one of the simplest ways to cut the bill. Most throws and blankets have an auto shut-off: never use them folded or with a damaged cable, and check the manual before using them with babies, very elderly people or anyone who cannot feel heat.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a heated throw cost to run?

A 150 W throw on its top setting uses 0.15 kWh an hour: about 3.9p at the price cap. Four hours a night for a month, about £4.74.

Is a heated throw cheaper than central heating?

Much cheaper to run, because it warms only you. It works best when you are sitting still; use it together with a lower thermostat setting.

How much does an electric blanket cost to run?

A double electric blanket typically uses about 50–100 W on the top setting, so warming the bed for an hour costs roughly 1–3p at the price cap. Check the rating label on yours.

Running costs use the Ofgem energy price cap, 1 October to 31 December 2026: average unit rate for electricity paid by Direct Debit (26.32p/kWh, standing charge 54.83p/day) and gas (7.97p/kWh).
